With many search and social networks releasing their Top 10 queries and trends for 2010, we thought we’d jump on the bandwagon to find out which were the most popular blog posts (not expert columns) of 2010 on SearchEngineWatch.

1. Facebook Login Fiasco Demonstrates Challenge in Competing with Google

You can’t make this stuff up.
If you’re not already aware, this week ReadWriteWeb wrote up a post pondering about how Facebook wishes to be the “One True Login.” The idea behind the post is that recent moves seem to suggest that Facebook wishes to become a starting point for most users to the rest of the web.

2. Rosa Parks Still Causing Controversy 55 Years Later

Today marks the 55th anniversary of the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the Montgomery, Alabama bus and it seems the remembrance is causing another controversy. Today is also World Aids Day and people are complaining that the Google Doodle commemorating Rosa Parks should have been one bringing attention to AIDs.

3. Many 2010 Election Results Too Close To Call

If anyone tells you that one vote doesn’t matter, go to Yahoo! News or Google News this morning and search for “too close to call.”

4. Google Instant – 10 Things Marketing Teams Need to Know

Google Instant took flight yesterday from the ashes of some mysterious logos and via a live transmission on Google’s Official Youtube Channel. What was announced was arguably the biggest change in the user interface (UI) of search engine results pages since search engines were invented and one of the most sophisticated engineering projects for Google since Caffeine. Ben Gomes, Distinguished Engineer at Google, had a great phrase to summarize the announcement, “Google Instant seems so obvious, that in retrospect, you’ll wonder if search could have been any other way.”

5. How Much is a Google Top Spot Worth?

Chitika, search-based online advertising network, reckons that top rankings on Google is worth double the traffic of ranking in the number 2 spot, in a report announced on their blog today.

Halloween is tomorrow, meaning searches for costume ideas on Google and Yahoo are hot this week (and have been growing since late August). Their lists of rising searches may give you a sneak preview of what you can expect to see at Halloween parties this weekend, and what you may want to avoid if you’re looking for some last minute ideas.

7. Google Officially Changes Name to Topeka, TEXTp Saves YouTube Bandwidth

Okay, so my usually reliable sources weren’t so reliable. No one tipped me off that Google would officially change its name to Topeka or that YouTube would go to text-only mode, or TEXTp, on April 1, 2010. You know, April Fools Day.

8. 7 Reasons Why Google Instant Makes SEO Dead-on Relevant

Steve Rubel kicked off a furore among the SEO community during the Google Instant launch event on wednesday last week, which most people were following on Youtube. The furore was specifically caused because he blogged a classic “SEO is dead” post – somewhat of a tradition among the bloggerati. Matt Cutts and Vanessa Fox were quick to respond and steer the discussion away from hysteria. We know geeks love Pacman – well this one does and it seems the people over at Google are also part of the Pacman fan club . The doodle of the day is in honor of Pacman’s 30th birthday – a functional game.
